Foreword by famous Italian sculptor Elio Armano

Things are not what they look like…

It is stronger than us: what we do not see is as if it did not exist; are the material limits of our eye and the constraints that inevitably result in the head of the animal that we are.

It follows that all that is called art, or is the product of the imagination, is determined by what the human eye registers, metabolizes and transforms, our eye: extraordinary nature construction that focuses and transmits to the brain what we look at, in a way a camera can not even imitate.

Then the so-called artistic "avant-garde" of the 1900s looked at the natural phenomena with different eyes, those of science and technology, through microscopes and telescopes, and through the advent of cinema and the sound of psychoanalysis. Unlike during Renaissance, the “animal man” understands that he is no longer the center of the world, even though he does not give up the unquestionable pretense of dominating the world, with a dangerous delirium of omnipotence and refusal to accept his own limits. Environmental disasters and wars with the dissolute use of science speak for themselves.

Returning to the vision, it is understood that things are not exactly how we see them and how art and literature have rendered them for centuries perhaps with the paradoxical exception of primitives.

The advent of the microscope and its opposite has dismantled the secular setting of the western arts, and pave the way for the phenomenon of abstractism in all its articulations, from those educated, up to the worldly and mystifying ones.

Inside the door we saw "other" worlds, from Malevich to Kandinski, from Mondrian to Pollok, from Vedova to surrealism, the foundations of the representation were dimmed and delused by simply looking inside the optical microscopes.

Art has proven to be able to react by riding the tiger that led her into the unexplored jungles of science. To understand if he survived it is necessary to wait for posterity. Certainly, the new atomic resolution tools have given a deadly final blow to the world of representation.

To simplify this latest revolution, one might say that we are still in front of a prothesis (like glasses have been for centuries) and that the new microscope will never produce what the tears are.

But if these are subsidies, will you really use them to "see"? in the sense of being able to see?

Perhaps it is best to remember Democritus that, a beating of eyelashes ago, he had guessed our being merely and wonderfully star-dusted.

Elio Armano
